Life is an Ultra Marathon: Mastering the Mindset to Achieve the Impossible

Updated: Aug 1

We’ve all heard the sayings: “Patience is a virtue” and “Life’s not a sprint.” But what if we dared to think bigger—much bigger? Not just in metaphor, but in action, vision, and lived reality? Because the truth is this: your most meaningful goals—those dreams that stir your soul—will never be found on the path of convenience.

They live at the edges of your limits.

And getting there?

It’s not just a marathon.

It’s an Ultra Marathon.

This is no smooth, flat tarmac run.

Life’s terrain is unpredictable: rugged climbs, punishing descents, erratic weather, and mental storms that threaten to knock us off course. It takes resilience of the highest order to keep going.

But here’s the beautiful truth

….we are designed for this.

As humans, we are born with a miraculous combination of athletic ability and an endlessly adaptive brain. Everything you dream of achieving IS within reach. But most people never start. Not because they can’t—but because they don’t truly desire it enough.

Desire is the ignition switch. Discipline is the fuel. Vision is the compass.

The real risk isn’t failure—it’s not starting. As endurance legend Dean Karnazes reminds us: “Run when you can, walk if you have to, crawl if you must; just never ever give up.”

I’d only add one more truth to that: recalibrate often. Keep your eyes on the horizon, but never forget to check your compass.

Life is not about speed; it’s about stamina. Ultra marathons don’t begin until the marathon ends. I know this because I’ve been there. I’ve run 107 miles nonstop through 25 freezing hours. I’ve battled sand, dehydration, and doubt in the Sahara during the Marathon des Sables. I’ve been freezing on Dartmoor and in Brecon, crossing rivers and wading boggy marshes.

These moments don’t define me—but they’ve refined me. They’ve shown me how deep the human spirit can dig.

Pain is a promise on the path of life. But there’s pain, and there’s Pain - choose your HARD in life:

The first pain is discomfort—lost toenails (eight in the Sahara!), cramps, chafing, blisters. Uncomfortable, yes, but survivable (although you might lose your sense of humour momentarily!).

The second pain is danger—heatstroke, hypothermia, or mental burnout. For that, you need awareness, respect, and strategy.

Your job is to learn the difference. Condition your mindset to master the first and avoid the second.

Think of your life goals like an ultra-endurance expedition. Your success framework:

• Build preparation into daily habits.

• Stay laser-focused on growth and self-leadership.

• Fuel your body and mind continuously.

• Assemble your team—no one goes far alone.

• Carry tools to navigate the dark (yes, mental darkness too).

• Know your route—and course-correct when needed.

• Visualise the end—deeply, emotionally, vividly.

• Break your big dreams into smaller wins

• Calm your nerves, find your rhythm and cadence

And when you think you’re finished, dig again. At mile 98, something magical happens: purpose outshines pain.

The finish line? It’s not on a podium. There’s no roar of crowds or flash of cameras. Sometimes, it’s just a field at dawn, silence all around, a warm cup of tea, and a soul ablaze with quiet victory.

And in that stillness, a new thought emerges: What’s next?

Michael Jordan once said, “I demand from myself more than anyone else can humanly expect. I am competing with what I am capable of.” Amen to that.

Your greatness doesn’t lie in what you’ve achieved. It lies in what you’re still willing to reach for.

And remember what the US Navy SEALs teach: Most people only tap into 40% of their true potential. When you think you’re done, you're really only 40% done. There’s far more in the tank than most will ever discover.

In the words of Viktor Frankl: “Those who have a Why to live can bear almost any How.”

This is not just inspiration. It’s instruction. Face your fears. Relish your failures. And live your dreams.

The terrain is yours.

The trail is waiting.

Now Run.
